SILKE
Control of Integrated Supply Chains |
| |
The management board game SILKE demonstrates the fields of
problems and methods of resolution when managing multistage supply
chains with intra-company and inter-company processes. Apart from
general logistical tasks such as production program planning,
capacity planning and the MRPII concept, primarily more complex
correlations of Supply Chain Management are presented and clearly
resolved. What is more, the most recent results from SCM research
are put into management game practice.
Its modular structure keeps the management game flexible for 8-14
players. At the same time, customizing the complexity becomes
possible and thus the level of requirements on players’ preparatory
training. Diversification of the supply chain is also possible
during the seminar in order to accommodate the learning effect. As a
rule, a management game seminar includes a 1.5-day course with
theoretical and management game parts, which can be expanded to 2.5
days in advanced SCM seminars.

Experience
Apart from a multistage, converging production process, above
all information flow and material flow times between the process
steps are especially important in the management game SILKE. In the
case of local information, these are principally responsible for the
so-called bullwhip effect, the cyclical overreaction in production
planning and control when demand is stochastic. Capacity constraints
of parts supply make supplier independence and the necessity of
foresighted production planning clear.
Additionally, the importance of flow-related process design is
explained. Apart from the parallelization of process steps, above
all variant management is addressed.

Comprehend
By playing several periods, potentials for
improvement can be identified gradually and implemented.
Thus the resulting effects are developed individually
and made clearly comprehensible to the participants.
By alternating sequences of theory and practical play,
passive communication of information is augmented by
active development of knowledge. Accordingly, the
sequence of the management game is divided into several
blocks building upon one another, which each analyze the
knowledge acquired in the preceding stage and process
and utilize it for solving further fields of problems. | |

Learn
The SCM management game SILKE prepares specialists
and executives from industry as well as university
students for the challenge of Supply Chain Management.
At the same time, the complex correlations and relevant
decision parameters are made clear to them in a vivid
way. Conducting a management game helps to lastingly
utilize the knowledge literally worked out.
